Football Club

The University of St Andrews Football Club is one the largest sports clubs at St Andrews and aims to provide all members a first class footballing experience to go alongside the first class academic experience the University is renowned for.

With over 260 members, Saints Football offers opportunities to play at a performance, competitive and recreational level.

The club supports seven men’s teams and three women’s teams that compete regularly in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league and cup competitions across the country throughout the academic year. Since 2011 Saints Football have collectively won 14 league titles and 6 cup competitions. The club also supports 2 recreational men’s teams and 2 recreational women’s teams.

Founded in 1887, the Football Club is long established as one of the largest and most successful clubs at the University. Our club philosophy ‘Our Legacy. Be Remembered.’ and three core values Respect | Passion | Excellence defines what we stand for, is a promise we make to our teammates, and will help us continue to develop everyone involved in our programme, both on and off the pitch.

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships

Saints Football currently supports 7 competitive men’s squads and 3 competitive women’s squads within the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championship – the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK.

Each squad competes on a weekly basis throughout term time in the tiered BUCS league structure and BUCS knockout competitions, contributing to the University’s overall standing in the BUCS points table.

Recreational football

The Football Club runs a very successful recreational league programme that is open to all students, offering the continuity of playing football with a regular team but in a more informal environment. You don’t have to be a member of a club or team – just gather a group of friends and sign-up.

Saints Sixes

Saints Sixes offers weekly competition during term time, with teams grouped into leagues of similar ability battling it out for the title during each 10-week campaign. Games run on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout from 6.30pm until 10:30pm.

Student Sunday League

The Student Sunday League programme is a series of 11 a-side football leagues, seeing approximately 200 students play in the programme every Sunday during term time. Teams are grouped into leagues of similar ability that compete for promotion/relegation at the end of the season.

Coach education

The University provides many opportunities for students to gain coaching qualifications during their time at St Andrews, and develop their coaching and teaching skills in various training environments throughout the year.

  • Through the Scottish Football Association we are able to offer Level 1, 2 and 3 online coaching courses aimed at candidates from our student body and local prospective coaches.
  • We encourage students to take the next level when appropriate and can offer considerable subsidies towards course fees.
  • Once qualified, students can gain experience and develop their skills by coaching in local community projects:
    • Internal club coaching opportunities with recreational and competitive teams
    • Youth coaching at St Andrews and East Neuk Girls Football Club

International volunteering

Ever Summer, student volunteers from St Andrews team up with students from seven other UK universities as part of the Volunteer Zambia Project to support the work of leading Zambian sports NGO, Sport in Action.

Students spend 8 weeks in Lusaka helping Sport in Action to deliver sustainable sport for young people across a group of community sport hub sites in some of Zambia’s poorest communities.
