On Sunday February 21, the football club had a chance to hear from the former men’s 1st team captain and recently appointed Opposition Analyst for the Canadian Men’s National Team, Alex Dodgshon. Dodge delivered a session about how data can be applied to tactical analysis within matches, along with reflecting on his journey from being a St Andrews student and athlete to working for the Canadian Men’s national team.

Dodge reviewed how he analyses opponents before their matches with Canada, and through an interactive presentation, he demonstrated how patterns of movement, both with and without the ball, can be understood through data.

The session led current club members to reflect on how analysing movement and patterns of play can be used to gain an advantage over opponents and led to many thought-provoking conversations in the session.

Dodge also described the journey of how became Canada’s opposition analyst from being a St Andrews student and football player a few years before. The story gave current players a chance to visualize how their own careers might progress in the years after university, and emphasized that there is often not a straight line to a great career!

It was fantastic to speak with Dodge- and the conversation really affirmed why we are so proud of our alumni! Best of luck to Dodge with his career with the Canadian Men’s national team!
