The Men’s Amateur progressed to the Quarter-Final stage of the Prestigious Fife Cup on Saturday after eventually overcoming Fife Thistle on penalites. The match had finished 4-4 which only tells part of the story as the Saints trailed 2-0 at half time, 3-1 and then 4-2 before 2 goals in the last 10 minutes, the equaliser coming with the last kick of the game, to get the tie to penalities. During regulation time goals from Sebastiaan Van Gilst, a brace from Charlie Andrews and then a scrambled effort header from close range by Matthew Irvine brought the Saints level.

In the shootout, goals from Charlie Andrews, Sam Beer, Jimmy Thompson, Akira Bowler, Bradley McCallion took the Saints through along with two vital saves from Nick Lightfoot. Ben Lintern’s miss proved not to matter in the end and for the second round running the team progressed. Attention now turns to the Quarter-Final in which the team will either face Rosebank Rangers from the same league or Freuchie from the league below. Tie to be played some time in March with the prospect of a semi-final up for grabs on either Thursday 16th or 23rd April.

Well done to the players for digging in and getting the job depsite not being at their best. The type of character and resilience shown will be key in the run in of games in both league and cups.
